Did you know that this Saturday is National Train Day?
Yesterday, I was pleased to bring you news about National Public Gardens Day and now we have even more reasons to get out of the house with the little ones this weekend. This Saturday, May 11th, marks the sixth annual National Train Day. For those of you who know us, you know that we are train people.
If there is a holiday train display, we are there. When the Morris Arboretum unveils the Garden Railway for the summer, we are there. Have a daughter who loves Thomas the Train and the Thomas the Tank Engine Story Collection? We do! I used to love commuting to New York City from North Jersey for graduate school and it’s a relaxing way to travel as you watch the scenery, knit, read a book or play games while the journey takes place. So, when I saw in our local paper that a nearby town was hosting events for National Train Day, I knew we had to go.
Sponsored by Amtrak, National Train Day seeks to spread the message that “trains matter.” They are fun to ride, provide a means of transportation for thousands of commuters, provide entertainment to as many caregivers who take kids to see them pass by, and help communities to grow and develop. The main website offers a slew of information and if you are looking to incorporate the day into your homeschooling or supplementing lessons, be sure to check out the fact sheets for different states like Pennsylvania. They offer information about how much money is spent on improvments and how many riders, on average, are seen at each station. It’s a place value activity in the making!
So, where can you find Train Day activities? The main website has a searchable database and if you are feeling ambitious for next year, you can think about hosting your own event. For those of you in South Jersey, if you are looking for a cute Mother’s Day activity, the Cape May Seashores Lines will be running on Saturday with departures at 10, noon and 2 and flowers are being provided for all of the moms in attendance.
Don’t forget to enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win a model train display too! For more information, you can visit Nationaltrainday.com or let them know why you ride at facebook.com/NationalTrainDay or @natltrainday on Twitter. Check out the video below to see why “trains matter” to different people.
Do you have train enthusiasts in your family? How have you incorporated train travel into a family day out? Why do “trains matter” to you?

Fun : ) Train day! I love taking the kids to the city on the train in the summer. A very stress free way to travel for sure. Hope your day tomorrow is lovely!
We are considering going down to Wilmington Western RR tomorrow. We had B’s 3rd birthday there and he loved it.
I had no idea! The kids loves trains, and just this morning Girly Girl lined ’em all up, as if she knew! Trains were my favorite mode of transportation in college: I’d use them to write and catch up on good books. Happy national train day!
National Train Day?! I have a two-year-old who’ll go crazy over that news. Thanks for the tip!
I love trains!!! My kids do, too, so that’s a plus. 😉 Thanks for the info!
My kids love riding the Easter Bunny train. It is always a favorite event!
We’ll be on the train a LOT this coming summer!
I had no idea! My boys will be excited to hear about this. 🙂
When my boys were little they had a train themed room, right down to the train toddler bed. I cried when that outgrew that bed! We used to plan our vacation every year timed for when Thomas was visiting Strasburg RR. I think it is so fun that they have a dedicated day for trains!
