Some weeks, having your groceries delivered to the door, like HelloFresh can do, is a lifesaver.
As much as we like to be frugal about our groceries, sometimes it’s just a nice treat to have someone else grab ingredients or hand me the recipe to make for the evening. We had a chance to check out what a HelloFresh Subscription box has to offer last week and I can definitely say that we have some new, whole food recipes to add to our rotation.
There are two types of boxes that can be ordered from HelloFresh (starting at $59 for two people). You can choose a mixed meal option (choosing 3 of 5 options) or choose the vegetarian box, which also has 3 meals. With Tomato being recently diagnosed with a peanut allergy, the vegetarian option gave us the best peanut free options. Our meals included a Lean and Green Pasta, Portobello Mushroom Burger and a Vegetable Tostada.
They were all excellent, had a handful of steps to follow, and the ingredients all arrived fresh and intact in a FedEx delivered box. Since the ingredients were individually packaged, I was able to check to see what may or may not have peanuts (we skipped serving her all of the baked goods included in the meals). New York City based HelloFresh tries to source as many local and organic ingredients as possible. It was nice to see them supporting local bakeries, such as Teixiera’s in Newark, NJ. As the company grows, it would be great to see the fresh veggies and herbs labeled as organic and/or local in order to know how they are sourced. So many grocery stores are heading in that direction, so customers are becoming more curious about that.
So, for whom would these subscription boxes be ideal? If you are a busy family or individual and want to have fresh food to come home to, this may be your answer. You can subscribe week to week, so you can figure out which weeks may be ideal or you can just add it to your meal planning and know that it is coming to your door. I think it would be a fantastic gift for families who have just had a new baby or have experienced a loss in the family. It shows that you want to help take care of them with good food and if you are far away, it takes the place of dropping by with yet another baked ziti. It would also be a great gift for parents to give to their son or daughter with their first apartment or for anyone to use as a housewarming gift. HelloFresh is an educational and healthy way to get good foods into your home. It is definitely worth a try! If you have any questions about HelloFresh, their FAQ is located here and goes into detail about delivery and prices.
How do you find new real food recipes for your family?

That looks like a great gift to send some friends who had a new baby! So glad they service the North Jersey/NYC area. Thanks for finding this, Becky!
This was a great find! Glad you found it to be as well.
This is a great option when you have a busy week and can’t make meals that are healthy.
Exactly, Trina! It’s a nice treat to give yourself and your family during crazy weeks.
Oh I love this! I google recipes all the time but that’s all. I need more “real food” recipes for sure!
I already put one of the meals into our meal plan again this week.
Never heard of this…good to know, especially for those I know living alone and not that interested in cooking.
You can buy for an even number of people, but it’s great for single folks to get together or have leftovers ready for the next day.
That looks worth checking out, thanks for sharing. I’m always looking for new recipes, and I often get them by asking friends what they’re cooking and loving. Who doesn’t love to share their kitchen successes?
So true, Xandra!
What a great idea! It’s so awesome to see companies coming up with food solutions other than prepackaged junk!
It’s a great trend to see, Nicole!
That does look like a great gift idea. I think I may start a Pinterest board just for ideas for helping families out in a time of need like a new baby or a recent loss.
Good idea, Barb! It’s definitely a great gift to send.
I am loving the veggie tostadas. I agree with Barb, this would be an amazing gift for new parents coming home with a baby! I bet you it would also help with calorie counting since the meals are bundled, you know exactly what you are taking in. Love it!
They were delicious, Linda! The calorie count is included on the recipe card too, so it’s perfect for those wanting to be healthier and watch their weight.
