TV Free Friday: On the Farm Options

by Becky Elmuccio on February 8, 2013

As we have been participating in the Locavore Challenge with Longview Farm Market, we have been able to stop by the farm and stock up on locally grown foods a couple of times over the last two weeks. We enjoyed roasted beets, sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots from the farm for dinner the other evening and it was great to know that we could eat locally and organically in February in Zone 7. Yesterday’s challenge had us heading back to the farm in order to visit the Tiny Tillers Storytime program with Miss Debbie.

The dead of winter can sometimes be a tough time if you are trying to avoid screen time with your little ones, but you definitely need to check out what Longview has to offer and see if any other farm markets, arboretums or nature centers in your area have programs for small children. Longview’s Tiny Tillers Storytime was lovely. Miss Debbie sits in the Book Nook area and shares stories about being on a a farm and eating fresh foods and yesterday’s story was the adorable Food For Thought. The kids talked about different fruits and veggies in the book, reviewed numbers and letters and then took a tour of the market and had a snack after the story. And it was free! Tiny Tillers meets each Thursday at 10 am. So, be sure to check it out, grab some local foods to take home and have the kids visit with the bunnies, Hops and Barley, and the chickens (scraps are available to feed them) before heading home.

Tiny Tillers is a lovely way to get to the farm in the winter, have your kids get some fresh air while visiting with the animals, and get out of the house in the midst of winter. Longview also offers a monthly Farm Sprouts program for kids ages 3-5 and centers on a theme with a farm based craft. Come summer, even the big kids can get in on the fun with summer camp options on the farm. Check out Greener Partners’ full calendar for all of the offerings.

How do you get your kids outdoors and away from the screen in the winter?

Disclosure: I have been compensated for my work with Longview, but all opinions are my own.

What a neat activity. Especially in winter!

I normally brave the cold, bundle the boys up and take them out in the woods for a walk, sled ride.

If it is too cold than we do LOTS of crafts.

We have had so many days in the teens lately. It was great to get out and do something outside of the house. We love our crafts though!

I definitely have a hard time finding things for my kids to do OTHER than tv during these cold winter months! Taking kids to a story time is a great idea!

It was great to get to the farm too, but our library and local Barnes and Noble also offer some storytimes. It’s a great way to stretch your legs, leave the house and find some great new tales.

Screen time is a real killer in the winter. This seems like so much fun. I know my kids would want to go everyday to see the bunnies and the chickens.

My little one talks about them daily and asks when we are going back. 🙂

This is so close to my home – I need to visit! I’ve noticed how much more TV the kids have been watching since the weather has been so cold – not good. Thanks for this great idea!

I’ve been struggling with screen time with my 4 year old. I’m pushing myself to get us out the door more often. Time to visit Longview!

The little mini market that they have set up is hours of fun too and Miss Debbie incorporates it nicely into the storytelling.

I read to my daughter. She is only 13 months old, but I already read to her every day. We read board books, of course, but I am also reading her A Series of Unfortunate Events as well as any other book that catches my fancy.

Great vocab in the Unfortunate Events series.

Oh I detest the cold – in fact my husband keeps threatening to move us to California!! Kids go outside daily at school – they even had partial lunch outside the other day and it was COLD. We’ll stay inside for now, but surely spring can’t be far off? We’ll go then!

I am impressed! It’s been too bitter cold for me, so I am glad that we found another indoor option.

This is why we moved to Oregon. I need to be able to get my kids outside all months of the year.

We’ve been lucky in spurts for weather this year, but the last few weeks have been bitter cold.
