Today marks the start of one of my favorite TV Free activities! It is time for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb. 15-18, 2013)! The GBBC is brought to you by the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the bird count aims to get families to sit outside, enjoy nature and collect research data to track what types of birds are in different locations around the world at this point in the calendar year. As you know from reading this blog, we are avid birders at this house and because of activities like the GBBC and setting up feeders at our home, Tomato actively asks us to identify birds wherever we see them. The GBBC is a great way to foster curiosity in children and to enjoy the great outdoors.
If it is your first time doing the GBBC, please take a moment to watch the Power Point presentation here. You can also hop over to their website and print out your data sheet, print a FREE PDF file of common birds and head outside this weekend to enjoy the event. When your 15 minute count is complete, be sure to submit your data and be registered to win prizes!! Have a great time everyone!
Are you a birder? Is your family curious about birds? Let me know if you plan to participate in the comments below!

Hope the powerpoint was helpful and that you guys had a good time!
Great post! We have fat from the pigs & birdseed here. I think we’ll make a snack for the birds!
Perfect!
That sounds like fun! It is the perfect sunny day here to do it too!
Glad that you had good weather for the event!
This is great! I did it for a class in college a few semesters ago, but completely forgot about it!
It’s a great way to get outside and enjoy what surrounds you.
I had never heard of the GBBC before, but will definitely see if I can interest the kids in it.
It’s a great family activity. Hope you guys had a great time!
This does look like a fun idea! I need to get the kids on board and get outside! 🙂
Hope you had a good time with it!
We shared this with our Girl Scout Troop last week. I hope some of them get out and count birds this weekend.
Hope it was successful for the scouts!
