Seed Catalogs

by Becky Elmuccio on February 12, 2013

Last week, I spoke about laying out my garden and today, I am thinking about what to grow and what varieties I would like to grow this year. I am excited to begin perusing the catalogs and looking online. I anticipate using heirlooms again this year and I have some great organic seed companies from which to order. I don’t seed start. We haven’t the space or the time at this point in life, so tomatoes, peppers and eggplants will all be purchased as plantlings again. Longview’s Locavore Challenge has asked us to share our garden plans this year. So, please do so with the #locavorechallenge on Twitter and Instagram and share what you are planning. Below are my top six favorite resources for ordering seeds and buying plants:

1) High Mowing Seeds – I purchase the majority of my seeds here.

2) Terrain – They offer lovely organic plantlings around Mother’s Day.

3) Seeds of Change – I love that these are available at local supermarkets as well as online.

4) Baker Creek Heirloom or Comstock Ferre – The Gettles are great heirloom preservationists and their magazine Heirloom Gardener is spectacular!

5) Renee’s Garden – I am looking at this catalog this year in order to plan my flower beds.

6) Happy Cat Organics – We got our onion and potato sets from Tim last year and we love that we can find local and organic seed options with them.

Where are you sourcing your seeds this year? Do you save seeds? I look forward to reading everyone’s posts this week. Enjoy your day!!

I wish I had a green thumb! The best I can do is buy some starter plants and hope for the best. I’ve often told my husband, if a kid came knocking on the door, offering to start a garden for me…I’d be all over it! There is a business idea for teens 🙂

Maybe we can set something up for me to come over some year, Colleen! We could definitely get a good kitchen garden going for your recipes.

Thanks for sharing the catalog resources. I have ordered from Cook’s Garden before and enjoyed their seeds. I usually order from Pinetree Seeds because the shipping is very reasonable and they carry heirloom and open pollinated varieties as well. Thanks for hosting this week!

Nancy, does Pinetree offer organic seeds?

I agree with Colleen, I wish I could garden too!! I kill everything. Not enough focus, I think, lol. But I know that homegrown is safer and tastes way better, and saves money…something to think about. Great list of resources!

Have you done container gardening before, Gina? Sometimes keeping it smaller can keep it easier.

Wegmans carries the High Mowing Seeds and Whole Foods carries some good brands too if you want to grab them locally.

Have you ever visited http://www.treesofantiquity.com? They sell heirloom seedlings for all kinds of fruit trees, grapevines, and berry bushes. They also have some great suggestions ofr growing in small spaces.
