An Organic Valentine’s Day

by Becky Elmuccio on February 11, 2013

Valentine’s Day is swiftly approaching and there are a few things to do to make yours more eco-friendly and organic.

1) Organic Foods

If you are cooking a Valentine’s dinner for your sweetheart/family, be sure to include organic and local ingredients. Organic beets from a local farm, like Longview Market, can be roasted and cut into hearts. I was thrilled to find organic bacon at Wegmans this past week, and this post on The Paper Mama has inspired us to make bacon hearts. Organic berries can also lend to some delicious desserts. If you are heading out to dinner, be sure to ask around for restaurants that source local produce, meats and dairy or cook with non-GMO ingredients. We have some great ones to choose from in the Philly area like Vedge, White Dog Cafe, and Farmica.

2) Organic Chocolates

We have been big fans of Endangered Species chocolates at Halloween and they have some great offerings for Valentine’s Day as well. They have some collections available for Valentine’s Day and when you buy from them, you know that your money is going to support Fair Trade practices and environmental causes.

3) Organic Flowers

Several grocery store chains are starting to source from fair trade dealers for flowers, but my top recommendation is Organic Bouquet. I bought our blood orange tree from them a few years back and I was very pleased with their product and their customer service. Organic Bouquet sources their flowers from Fair Labor farms and gives back to workers in underdeveloped countries through zero-interest loans and educational opportunities. For those of you looking to order flowers today, guess what, you are not alone. February 11th is the day on which the most orders are placed on Organic Bouquet for February 14th delivery. If you are looking for a company that not only offers beautiful flowers, but also is carbon neutral and conscience of sustainable practices, hop on over and pick out something lovely!

Thanks for checking out my suggestions. How are you trying to go green this Valentine’s Day?

Great ideas! I especially love the organic flowers/plants. I think my husband would actually appreciate an organic plant 🙂

Great ideas Becky! I’d also like to add that letting your kids make their own Valentines from stuff you already have is fun and green!

I love that for Valentine’s my hubs always gets me a rose plant that we can pot indoors until it’s warmer and then plant outside. I’m slowly building up my rose selection to what I used to have before we had to move!

What great tips! I strive to purchase locally grown, organic foods. I love supporting restaurants that do the same!!! I heard great things about Da Vibe Cafe in Wilmington, DE. http://www.superpages.com/bp/Wilmington-DE/Da-Vibe-Organic-Cafe-Coffeehouse-L2415069038.htm

Great ideas!
We’ve gone green and simple in recent years by going out to a nice dinner together and having the time spent together be the gift that we share. No buying, accumulating stuff, or wrapping involved! And much less stress!

Great ideas! I’m hoping to go to Aldi’s today or tomorrow to pick up some organic foods for dinner for Fat Tuesday and dinner on Thursday.

You know, we never really do much around here for Valentine’s Day, especially with Natalia only being 2. Maybe a cute breakfast would be easy enough.

Great suggestions. I also like getting upcycled items from Etsy, always such special gifts can be found there.
