TV Free Friday: Gardening Indoors During Winter

by Becky Elmuccio on December 7, 2012

First day of growth

One of the highlights of this week has been watching our Back to the Roots Mushroom Kit take off. I will be writing a full review once we harvest them and cook with them, but I wanted to show folks A) how cute the mushrooms are and B) talk about the excitement that it provides Tomato.

Third day of growth

She has a great time reminding me that we need to spritz the mushrooms twice daily. Thank goodness that she does as I can’t say that I remember on my own each time. In the winter months and with the cold weather setting in, it’s nice to have a new daily activity to entertain and occupy us. We will get at least two harvests from the kit, so this will keep us busy for the next few weeks.

Nikhil and Alejandro, the founders of Back to the Roots, have recently launched a new venture on Kickstarter. They would like to bring Aquaponics gardening into schools and homes and encourage folks to “urban farm” in a closed loop system. The new kit would come with organic seeds and detailed instructions on how to raise herbs and care for your fish in a careful and successful way. If you want to get an idea of what they are doing, please check out the video above and hop on over to support their venture if you are so inclined.

What are you doing indoors as winter sets in?

Disclosure: We have been provided with a Back to the Roots kit to review. My opinions and enthusiasm are my own.

Very cool! Can’t wait to see what you cook with the mushrooms. I bet your kid loves this activity.

Very neat. I grow herbs during the winter but I wish I had someone to remind me to water them 🙂

This is interesting. I have to say that I have never thought of indoor gardening.
