Wordless Wednesday: Asparagus

by Becky Elmuccio on September 19, 2012

What surprised me most in my garden this week?

Didn’t expect to see asparagus in September after I cut the ferns back to two inches high. What doesn’t surprise me is how many mornings I can eat figs with yogurt and granola.

I haven’t tried growing asparagus yet because it seems like a lot of work and tending. Any suggestions or tips on growing? julieann r

We have a dedicated raised bed. I ordered a set of 10 crowns from an organic catalog and followed the planting directions. They are super easy and require little maintenance. You can’t eat them the first year, but then get 2 weeks of edible stalks the next year, 4 the next, 6 the next and then 8 thereafter.

Where do you live that you can grow figs? I would love that!

We are in South Jersey. They require some burlap wrapping for the winter, but they do well.

I’ve never tried figs. Something I need to put on my list. Definitely.

This is only our first year with a garden but we were surprised (after thinking they were a dud this summer) to have our jalapenos finally come in!

Now I need to figure out how to incorporate them in every meal for the next two weeks and use them up 🙂

God bless!

They’ve been pretty good and simple to take care of so far. Let’s see if they continue to be as such.

Oh I love asparagus! My dad used to take us to wild fields to pick it… I didn’t realize you could actually grow it in your garden. Now I want to do this too! Just found your blog and have loved getting to know you better… I’m excited to follow along!

Thanks for stopping by! We love growing the asparagus in our raised bed. It doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. I’m off to check out your blog.
