We’ve had a few surprises in the garden this September.
First and foremost, these Matt’s Cherry Tomatoes just won’t quit. It has been a real treat for us as we continue to make sauces for pasta or enjoy them with hummus for lunch. This plant has generated a ton for us. In fact, between these and the Romas pictured below (of which we have only gotten a few handfuls)…
…we have collected 4 full bowls like this.
Next year, I will definitely need to get another of these plants so that we have enough to freeze and put up for the winter.
Our purple fingerling potatoes got off to a late start and I wasn’t sure when to check them. So, we pulled the one plant and it only had these sad little guys on it. I am bound and determined to get these potato boxes working. Maybe the third year will be the charm.
Our best surprise has been this little squash plant emerging from one of the pumpkins that we laid out for the squirrels to eat last fall. We’ll see if anything comes of it before the first frost, but in the meantime, it has been fun to watch it grow.
Have you had any late summer garden surprises?

Hi Becky, I’m Anne from Life on the Funny Farm (http://annesfunnyfarm.blogspot.com), here from Monday Mingle. I do a little gardening, too, so it’s nice to “meet” you!
I’m excited to pull up our potatoes soon to see if we had better luck this year than last! Isn’t it fun when you get those extra surprises at the end of a season!? Now I’m super stoked to get my fall/winter plants ordered!!
My son would flip over those cherry tomatoes! I’m allergic, myself, but he could eat them like grapes!
I love tomatoes. Mine have been done for a bit, and I haven’t planted any this fall (I am in Florida). I should blog about gardening. I like reading about it.
I’m a new Linky follower from the blog hop.
I’d love it if you’d visit my blog.

The biggest surprise is that I’ve actually managed to keep my garden alive all summer long! I think this is the best I’ve ever done. It wasn’t hugely successful – a tomato and jalapeno pepper here and there, plus some herbs. But it was HUGE progress that I didn’t kill them all halfway through!
You have a beautiful garden….I love getting those last bits of summer produce out of the back yard! julieann r
Your garden is beautiful! I am so jealous of all your tomatoes! Home grown tomatoes are the best!
Yum those tomatoes look so good. Great flavour !
Sometimes the volunteers are the best things int he garden. 🙂 Hope you get a small squash before the frosts!
Love those tomatoes. I can’t imagine myself buying tomatoes in store when we can plant tomatoes in the ground or in the pot ^_^ Your garden is pretty.

Yummy tomatoes~~!
It is wonderful when you have garden surprises. Cherry tomatoes are a staple in my garden because they really won’t quit. We don’t get ripe tomatoes till August so the season is short, but when they come we have plenty to eat and roast. I made a new bed last month with my own compost. Lots of tomatoes and pumpkins and sunflowers are sprouting. Too bad none will get to produce. I hope that bed gets some next year.

thanks for linking up! Cherry tomatoes have always been my best producers!
We got a few potatoes, but only enough for two people in one meal. The weather just did not cooperate. I love the squash growing as a surprise. Those are the best! I love to see what pops up where you don’t expect it.
Lovely tomatoes! They are the best part of summer – I’d probably eat most while picking! I do appreciate you sharing your lovely garden with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
