What has been my hardest challenge in the garden this year?
Weeds have given me a run for my money this year in the garden. I have been honest about it and feel that my excitement over the potential of what I could do in the garden has gotten ahead of me. I’ve also been tackling a bunch around the house, chasing after a 2 year old, and trying to squeeze in workouts when I can in order to be healthy. Thus, the garden hasn’t been as pristine or organized as I would like for it to be.
So, the next week will be spent in the garden in the mornings. Tomato is laid up with a cold, so we have downtime already scheduled. I’ll be making a list of what to tackle.
- Charge the battery on the weedwhacker
- Trim the weeds in the big plot and along the back fence
- Put brown paper down to deaden the areas that I want for beds
- Call around for dirt to be delivered
- Look at pics from Longwood Gardens to arrange the blackberries
- Put up chicken wire around beds
This is enough of a list for the week without getting overwhelmed with other projects. I’ll check back next week to let you know how we did. Tomato will benefit from the fresh air to clear her head and I will benefit from checking things off the list to clear mine too.

On my way to check out your blog! Hopefully, I can conquer the weeds this week.
I invested some time and money in doing raised beds this year instead of in-ground planting. It saved so much time, sweat, pain and effort that I had time to do other things instead. julieann r
We have a bunch of raised beds going and I think I may reconstruct that big space to have several beds.
i tried a desert garden… i didn’t do too well! looks like you’re doing well though 🙂
If I can get those couple of patches under control, we’ll have a good win for the season.
I can’t wait to see your progress! I’m dreaming of the day I can have a garden 🙂
Fingers crossed that it transforms well this week!
I hate weeding! Good luck with it!
I”m your newest follower from the Monday Mingle 🙂

Thanks for stopping by! Off to check out your blog and plan the attack of the weeds.
I didn’t get a garden this year. We didn’t have a way to till and with the drought it was probably all for the best.

Weeds won against me this year too!
Hi Becky,
I was just curious do you mulch every other year or use Preen? I find that both really keep the weeds from popping up. So sorry to hear about your dilemma. You have such a nice piece of property.
I’ve been struggling with weeds, too this year! We didn’t mulch which I think made a big difference in the flower beds. I was also a lot busier with the kids.
I love my yard and working in it. My challenge has been trying to keep things alive. Texas heat is bad on flowers and grass. Water bill blows your mind, but cannot afford to let everything die.
Our summer was very hot and humid this year in New York City, and most of my flowers and garden suffered because of it. There is always hope for next year!
Our challenges were drought and wind, this year. Plus a *very* busy mama of 8 with not a lot of time for gardening! 🙂 Still, we enjoyed being in the out-of-doors as much as possible.
my hardest challenge? staying motivated for the long hall. after a couple months i am burnt out. i am hoping our new garden set up will lead to less burn out. LOL
