Can We Beat the Heat in the Garden?
It has been about a month since I last checked in about our organic garden. It’s been a busy month with the transition from the school year to summer and the changes in schedules which that brings. I’ve also been enjoying my time in the Summer Blog Challenge and you can catch my most current posts here. In the last month, you may have heard that we have had a heat wave all across the country. South Jersey has been no exception. I believe it was 110 degrees F on Saturday with the heat index. Ridiculous and very unkind to the plants, no matter how much we water.
Some varmint got into the potatoes and now, this box is done. |
Somehow, one little guy is hanging on. |
The onion bed is doing wonderfully! |
Hello cucumbers!! |
Jalapenos are enjoying the heat! |
The Black Beauty eggplants are beginning. |
We are certainly going to have a bevy of cherry tomatoes this year. |
Not looking good for the San Marzanos |
These container tomatoes keep bouncing back and forth with the heat. |
We are loving these blackberries as they hit their peak. |
I’m excited that this front blueberry bush is growing well this year. Perhaps we’ll get berries next year. |
The fig tree, while in need of some weeding, is doing well. |
We definitely have some repairing to do here in the off season. |
Welcome to weeding! |
I’m not sure what this weed is, but I’m really good at growing it. 🙂 |
How is your garden growing in July?

Your garden looks great! We have tons of cherry tomatoes this year (my hubby wanted them) and I don’t even eat them! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by! I don’t eat the cherry tomatoes either, but our little one loves them. Let’s see how much she can handle in the coming weeks!
Looks really good! Up in North Jersey we’ve had temps in the high 90ies and you’re right that no matter how much you water it’s just too hot. Although my poblano and bell peppers are loving the heat.
Jalapenos are definitely coming through in full force. It’s my first time doing container tomatoes and I think I need to water more to keep them from drying out. Thanks for stopping by!
Your garden is beautiful! How can you not like cherry tomatoes? 🙂 Home grown tomatoes are the best candy in the world!!!!!
I’m not a cold tomato person, but love them cooked up in the skillet for a quick sauce.
Your garden looks great! With reformed brown thumb and 100 degree weather since april, I don’t think there’s hope for mine 😉
(here from Barn Hop)
I think your garden is looking pretty good! I live in the desert, and we’re looking at 105 for the next 3 days. Ugh.
Your cucumbers look wonderful! Do you find they attract aphids? Ours seem to succumb to aphids every season. Any suggestions?
Your garden is coming along very nicely. We just started to get some sun finally so mine is way behind 🙁
Hope you can stop by, say “Hello” and “Like” Hood Photography on Facebook! Thanks!
Hi Becky: Your garden is looking great, and you are taking very good care of it, it appears, in your heatwave weather. I love your cuke trellis–very cool idea. I have one small green tomato so far, and no flowers yet on the eggplant, but where we live the summer only just started last week in terms of weather in the Pacific Northwest, so they’ll catch up soon. Take care, and have a fantastic rest of the week!
Thanks for linking up to Garden Tuesday! My fig tree is more like a fig bush. Did yours naturally grow that way?
everything is looking so happy! you are definately doing something right…thank you for linking up to Fishtail Cottage’s garden party this week…xoox, tracie
Your garden is coming along wonderfully – too bad the critter got into your potatoes! I have squirrels that eat my fruit – they take one or two bites and throw it on the ground! Weeds – I’ve got those!!
I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
