Philadelphia Plastic Bag Ban Petition

by Becky Elmuccio on July 26, 2012

Why is it important to ban plastic bags in Philadelphia?

Even though we tend to take reusable bags to each store at which we shop, it would be great for my daughter to grow up in the Philly area and not see plastic bags being handed out in the city’s stores. It would cut down on oil consumption, take trash out of our oceans and take disposable out of our everyday conscious that much more. As of today, July 26th, 2012, several Philly area bloggers are launching an effort in conjunction with Green Philly Blog to get a petition signed to ban plastic bags in Philadelphia.

Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Toronto and many other cities have taken this green step. It’s up to us to add Philly to that list and help spur on other communities to be more eco-conscious. Philly voted on and rejected such a ban back in 2009, but we think it’s time to try again and hope that we can create change in 2012.

Check out the infographic below from Arte Ideas to understand more about why plastic bags are detrimental for our and the planet’s health. If you would like to join me and sign the petition, please follow this link or use the link on the right sidebar. Stand up and make a change, Philly!

That’s a great infographic to help make your case! Plastic bags are also dangerous to have in a house with kids and we’ve stopped using because of that (and for other reasons of course!).

I’m so happy to see these petitions popping up in different places! A lot of my friends live in the DC area and I know that it was a great day when they finally got a ban passed on plastic bags there! Good luck!

we’re not in Philly proper, but we do our bit out in the burbs. We dont give bags out to every customer; only those who want one. AND they’re PAPER. good right?

Paper is better, Pam! And that’s great that they only go to those who ask.
