What the easiest way to freeze berries?
We are knee deep in the berry season here in the Philly area. Mid-season blueberries are in full force and blackberries are just starting to pop. We have a ton coming in on our bushes, so being able to enjoy them at their height is of utmost importance.
Earlier this season I had the pleasure of buying local organic raspberries from Brookeberry Farms at the Collingswood Farmers’ Market. They are out of this world, but it’s tough to eat a whole crate inside of a week, no matter how much we try. Whole Foods also had organic blueberries on sale for $1.99 a pint and I bought 10 of them. So, I hopped over to my mom’s house (as we have a side by side freezer which makes freezing a bit tough) and followed these steps for blueberries and raspberries.
1) Rinse your berries in a colander and pick out those that are not fresh.
2) Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper and lay out the berries in a single layer.
3) Put the cookie sheet into the freezer for 24 hours.
4) Pull out the sheet (as pictured in the collage above) and label baggies with the type of berry and the date.
5) Bag the berries and put them back in the freezer. Now you are set for fresh berries for the next 4-6 months. Pop them out of the freezer to munch on as crisp berries, throw them in a smoothie or let the defrost and enjoy them in a dish that you like.
How do you keep your berries to enjoy them later in the season?
