Greatest Gift Ever Received

One of the greatest gifts that I ever received was time with my maternal grandparents. We were very close with my Nana and PopPop. They lived two streets over when we were little, we stayed at their shore house in the summers while we grew up, and they showered us with love. When I was in high school, we had an assignment to interview an older person about the Great Depression and World War II. What a gift these taped conversations are!! I will have to convert them into a digital format at some point so that Tomato can hear them, or always keep something with a tape deck in the house. They are filled with tales of my Nana cutting school to see Frank Sinatra in Philly and my PopPop’s war stories, which he had never shared prior to this.
In addition to these stories, I have several of my Nana’s recipes. Beef stew, chicken and dumplings and a loose sense of her mac and cheese are tucked away in my recipe binder. When I was in my second apartment, I would call her on Saturdays and she’d walk me through the recipe. I’d get the ingredients, make the dish and call back on Sundays to talk about how it went. She was an amazing cook and I hope that I can embody her love of giving her family a good meal so that Tomato has that passion when she gets older.
What’s your greatest gift?
