Early June Organic Garden

by Becky Elmuccio on June 4, 2012

What is growing in your garden this week?

This week, we have blueberries at a point where they can be picked and eaten, blackberries transitioning from flowers to berries, and potatoes teasing the dirt from which they are emerging. We even landed some volunteer sunflowers where the squirrels must have dropped seeds last year. Plus, irises and hydrangea are giving us great color bursts in the midst of all of the veggies. Check out what’s popping up in the pictures below. Let me know what you have going in your spaces and have a great week of gardening!
Tomatoes are inching upward
Big, bold irises are nearing their last weeks
Look what’s for breakfast tomorrow!
I enclosed this blueberry a chance against the rabbits.
Blackberries are showing a lot of promise.
Volunteer sunflowers
Cucumbers are approaching thinning time.
As Tomato says, “Carrots are peeking!!”
Aspaaragus seed anyone?
Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant bed is moving along.
Tomato is so excited to show everyone her potatoes. She knows exactly where each little leaf is.
This week’s mystery is what is on top of this onion. Time to hit the books.

Is it okay to let the asparagus go to seed? I noticed some on mine that I planted this spring.

My blueberries aren’t quite ready yet, though I think we may get a decent harvest this year.

We let them go like this last year and then cut them back to two inches high in the fall. Then, we covered with extra compost or you can do straw to let it settle over the winter.

I’m visiting from the Homestead hop ☺ Your photos are amazing! We lost our blueberries to a late freeze this year. I was so disappointed. But, our raspberries and blackberries have berries on the bush! I just covered them yesterday with cheese cloth to keep the birds away from them. They are first time berries so I don’t expect much this year, but at least it’s a first ☺ Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for stopping by, Mary! I’m sorry that you lost your blueberries, but hope you get a good crop of blackberries and raspberries. We have been toying with doing raspberries for next year.

Is that an endless summer hydrangea? It’s beautiful! So is that sunflower. Yummy blueberries! I hope ours produce more this year.

I don’t think it is, Darla. I am pretty sure that it drops back and we get greens for late summer and fall. Blueberries were super yummy for lunch this week!

You have such a sweet garden! I love all the beds and you have such a nice variety of veggies growing! Could that bud by your onions be an allium that sneaked in?

Visiting from Fishtail Cottage!

Jane

Jane, it is something on top of one of the onion greens. Not sure what to make of it. Thanks for stopping by!

Things are coming along beautifully in your garden. I just discovered this morning that some of my blueberries are missing – not many to begin with! Squirrels I think! I thoroughly enjoyed the post and appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
