Worst Injury Ever

What is my all time worst injury?

Escalator meet knee. Knee meet escalator. About 5 years ago, we were heading to the movies with friends after a fun, Mexican food dinner out. The mall that we went to had closed, but the movie theater was still open on an upper level. We had to take the stopped escalator up. Birkenstocks are my favorite shoes, but they can be a bit clunky to climb a stopped escalator in. Just a few steps in, I clipped the shoe on a step and down I went. I knew it was bad and even told my husband that I needed to go to the hospital before I looked at it.
He wasn’t so certain, and turned me around to sit on the stairs. That was when we realized that I had slice my left knee down to the bone. You could see every layer of muscle, fat and bone like we were in a biology class looking at a dissected animal. It was disgusting! We got me to the ER, and four hours later, I had my first set of stitches.
Now, I had endured knee pain in that knee for about 15 years. It was primarily due to overuse in softball and swimming. When the rain was coming, I knew a day ahead of time. Forget squatting for any period of time. I would have sworn that down the line I would need knee surgery. However, thanks to that fall and slice through everything, I have not had any pain in that knee in five years. Guess I hit just the right spot! Now I can handle squatting up and down in the garden. All thanks to that ominous escalator and a great ER doctor’s stitching skills.
