Mother’s Day Garden Gift

by Becky Elmuccio on May 14, 2012

When my husband asked what I would like for Mother’s Day, I replied that I would love time in the garden. We had a bunch of items that needed taking care of and a few solid hours on a beautiful Sunday would be perfect for completing them. So, after Tomato woke up, had breakfast and got dressed, we headed outside.

Weeds had totally overtaken the blackberry patch

All cleaned up and ready to breathe

I staked a bunch of the branches to help clean up and keep the berries up high.

New canes have already started. We began with two bushes and now have six since we rebury these each season.

The canes that shoot out have the red hue and are thicker.

Any asparagus that wasn’t picked became a bushy fern.

I propped them up on supports to keep the bed tidy.

Hey there, blueberries!

The clematis is climbing and starting to bloom on the lightpost.

The figs are looking plump and healthy.

Peonies are about the bloom! Yay!

Onions are totally flourishing in this bed.

Potato bins are ready to be prepped this week. We are behind on getting these in, but we will see how it goes.
This one little blackberry bush has gone rogue from the patch. I need to transplant him back into the fold.
New dirt was added to the cucumber and carrot bed.

I add 2 cups of the veggie Dr. Earth to each bed at the start of the season. I drizzle the flower one around the blackberries, blueberries and flowers.

Bed with Dr. Earth fertilizer

I also added Biochar to the tomato and cucumber beds.

Happy Cat Organic Seed started selling Biochar and I grabbed a jar this year. It is burnt wood and helps cycle the nutrients and support your plants.

I split the jar between 2 4×8 beds.

All prepped and ready for planting today.

I got new terra cotta pots, but wish I could find ones made more locally.

Fish heads and guts are added beneath each tomato, pepper and eggplant in order to provide a great food source.

Tomato, pepper and eggplant bed is all set.

New potted Ceylon tomato

A Black Russian and Roma Plum tomato pair

It was a great day to plant and spend time with my family. I hope everyone else had a lovely Mother’s Day!

Enjoyed stopping by and looking at your garden. Everything looks great. I will have to remember the fish guts thing. I use the wood we burn (ashes) to put on our garden. Came over from Sidewalk Shoes

What a beautiful garden you have! I am eyeing my raspberry plants, anxiously awaiting the first blooms, but it won’t be until July until we actually get berries here. My clematis are beginning to bloom–I bet your vigorous one will be lovely, too! I would so love a fig–enjoy your first ripe one!

Thank you, Athena! My little one had raspberries for the first time in the last two days. Since she ate 3/4 of a pint at each sitting, I think I may need to invest in some raspberry plants for next year. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out.

Your garden beds look so organized and easy to garden in. I like all the organic additives you give the soil…perfect. I garden organically and my veggies love it.

It’s amazing what doing it organically can yield. It’s so much better for everything all around. Thanks for stopping by!
