Garden Update: Week of May 7th

by Becky Elmuccio on May 8, 2012

This week in the garden, plants and flowers continue to wake up. We are between foods to eat, but are looking forward to how the onions are doing and how the blueberries are starting to appear. Check it our below!

Blueberries are getting there!

Onions are taking off.

Some asparagus wasn’t picked in time and thus, 6 foot tall ferns have resulted.

This year’s tomato and pepper bed is ready for plants to be transferred.

Last year’s onion bed needs to be prepped and filled in with new dirt for cucumbers and carrots.

Is it silly that I get excited about buying beautiful dirt like these bags?

Tomato, pepper and eggplant plantlings – all organic

Local farmers market purchases

This guy lives under our forsythia bush with his extended family.

They are currently using this bed as a salad bar. More on why we are not planting here this year is to come!

So, what’s growing in your garden this week?

Looking good! I had to put my deer fence up early because our “friends” were visiting. My lettuce is ready to pick, however, I’m giving it to my pastor because I have lots of greens left over from our 1st C. party.

We luckily don’t have a deer problem. Hope the new fence is successful!

Hi Becky,

I see your garden is doing quite well already. Lots of wonderful things to come! Love the picture of your garden bunny. We have two that like to hang out under our willow bush. Enjoy the rest of your week and Happy Gardening!

We are definitely having a good time and the garden bunny has become an unofficial pet for my little one.

I have to check our soil out this week for pH levels and adjust some things to hopefully get more out of the blueberries. Wish me luck!

What a lovely garden! Your space is fantastic.

So… do you mind the rabbit in your garden? I am battling deer and it makes me peevish.

We don’t mind the rabbits. That big open space is getting overhauled this summer, so for now they can use it as a salad bar and playground.

Love your raised beds…I get excited about new soil too. Spray some garlic oil where you do not want the bunnies to walk.

Fantastic tip! We will definitely try that out.

I love this time of year! It is exhausting, but so satisfying, don’t you think?
I had to chuckle at your question about getting excited about dirt! I am anxiously awaiting my hubby’s return home from work with a truck load of compost/dirt for potting, transplanting and other exciting garden projects! And I could spend hours in the ‘big box’ hardware/garden stores ~ so many possibilities! ;~P

(I’d surely share my rhubarb plants with you if we lived close! Mine need to be divided.)

Have fun with the new dirt! I would definitely take you up on the rhubarb if you were nearby. Thanks for stopping by the blog!

Thanks for linking up! Did you leave that bed just for the bunnies?

Reply

Becky Elmuccio May 8, 2012 at 11:36 pm

We are checking that bed for lead in the soil since we have a garage with old, flaking paint. We are also trying to figure out what to do with paths and fencing too, so we’re leaving it be for this year to help us work on it and not ruin anything.

Your garden looks great and the bunny is adorable! I’m following you back from What’s cooking in the burbs. Have a great night!

Thanks for the follow back! We have a great time in the garden. If the weather cooperates today, it could be a massive weeding morning. Maybe I can recruit the bunny to help. 🙂

Thanks, Athena! I need to add some fertilizer and biochar today, just to pump it up a touch.

Hi Becky. I was wondering what you used for tomato supports. They look golden or orange and seem to be quite sturdy. Also thanks for dropping by my blog the other day with a comment. It’s nice to have a little chatter in the outfield. Blessings for your day!

I ordered them from http://www.gardeners.com. They come as a deep red, but fade in the sun. They are very supportive. Thanks for stopping by!

It is so exciting to see your garden grow! Especially when it is food for the home! Nothing better – I too get excited when I get compost – mulch and such – garden goodness!
