Blackberries, Weeds and Clematis, Oh My!

by Becky Elmuccio on May 31, 2012

We have had some massive heat here in the Northeast this week. Luckily, everything seems to fairing okay, including my clematis pictured above. We have been doing a lot of gardening at 8 am in the morning before the humidity really sets in. We tackled some of the weeds in the big bed and I’d love to know more about which weeds are growing and how they affect different aspects of a garden. Follow along in the pictures below to see what’s happening in our garden this week.
Before Weeding
After weeding – I took out the big green weeds in this section.

One massive root on those tall green weeds

Second wave of Irises

Blackberry flowers
We are going to get a ton of these berries this year!
Fig tree somewhat wilting with this heat. Poor thing!
Cucumbers are peeking through!
Onions are fairing well
Tomato, pepper and eggplant bed. Somehow nothing has unearthed the fish heads.
Container tomato
Flower buds on the tomatoes
It’s hydrangea time!

Looks like you will have a wonderful harvest come summer. I would love to grow blackberries, maybe I’ll give it a try. That is one HUGH weed.

i agree with Ann, you will have a wonderful harvest soon! I find it so interesting to see folks wanting to grow blackberries….here in Washington State they are so invasive that if they start in your landscape they will take over. One way many people try to control the blackberry here is to hire a goat to come and eat the shrubs in the landscape ~ although i will say, we love stopping and picking them on the road side for pies…yum! xoox, tracie

ps thanks so much for linking up to Fishtail Cottage’s garden party! enjoyed reading your post!

Your garden is beautiful with the mix of flowers, fruit and vegetables! I love the deep, deep purple clematis and iris–one of my favorite garden colors.

We have been doing some serious gardening around here too. With the early spring and lots of rain everything is growing like crazy. Your deep purple clematis is so gorgeous. 🙂
