Mid April Garden Update 2012

by Becky Elmuccio on April 23, 2012

A lot has been going on already in our garden. We are making some big decisions, such as leaving the large plot fallow this year to do some soil samples and repaint the garage without disturbing any food. We are also researching some fencing options, which could open up a whole new set of design, layout and color options for the border of our backyard.

So, what has started to peak through? Figs are one thing that are up and sprouting already.

We also have many lilacs in bloom. The scent is intoxicating and watching a toddler take a sniff is heartwarming.

Blueberries have flowered. We have four bushes altogether. I have some work to do to find out how to raise these best so that they flourish, flower and bear fruit. Right now, only one does so.

Last, but not least, we have planted onions again this year. Last year, we used seed. This year, we are giving sets a try. I got some free onions at the Philly Farm and Food Fest in early April. I also purchased a set of sets from the Happy Cat Organic Farm booth at that same event. They are Stuttgarter Onions. We can’t wait to see how they all come up this year. The rain from Sunday will certainly be a help!

So, what items are already in bloom and in the ground in your gardens? We are also linking up with the Homestead Barn Hop on The Prairie Homestead, Homestead Revival, and New Life on a Homestead, and the Homesteader Blog Carnival on The Morris Tribe this week. So, come hope along!

Is that a fig tree? Amazing that it already has a fig!

Our lilacs are in bloom, too. I meant to pick some before the rain, and didn’t get to it. Hopefully, they’re in good shape still.

I was surprised that we have figs already too! I think I counted over ten the other day. I definitely need to finish organizing my recipes in order to get some ideas going.

Fig trees show their figs before they sprout out anything else for the season. If a fig tree has leaves already and no figs, you know you aren’t getting any unless there is enough time for a fall crop.

Aren’t fresh figs the most marvelous of fruit!

We’re lucky to have two great bushes in the backyard. I am definitely thinking about a third as we think about putting in a fence.

Visiting from Bloomin’ Tuesday. What do you make with your figs? Those lilacs are gorgeous! Never smelled one before. Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by Daisy! Last year, we just cut them up and ate them fresh. I’d love to figure out some jams to make if I can get enough at one time. We are loving the lilacs too and the smell has been amazing!

Hi Becky, How interesting that you are growing figs. I grow blueberries and can shed a little light on what works for me. I live in the midwest and have grown blueberries for several years. Blueberries like acid soil. I bought a pH meter and monitor the acidity of the soil. Ideally for blueberries it should be 5.5 – 6. I modify the soil with sulfur, either plain old sulfur or aluminum sulfate (digging it into the soil around the roots.) I’m also big on compost, using it as top dressing. I’ve heard that you should have more than one cultivar as that will enhance production. Have a good week!

Thanks for the great tips, Beth! I have a pH meter and need to bust it out this weekend and see what I can do. I think we have more than one cultivar, but will check my notes from previous years. Thanks for stopping by!

I’ve tried starting a fig tree from cuttings several times, but no luck. I wish I had more room, because I love figs. I’ll have to live vicariously through your tree! And your lilac–wow! Mine don’t even have buds yet.

Athena, we bought the tree last year from Terrain in Glen Mills, PA. I was there again today and noticed that they had small organic ones in planting pots. I hope it produces several times this year. FIngers crossed!

It looks like my fig tree is not going to bloom again. Sad.

Bummer! Any particular reason why?

My MIL is overrun with figs each year- sadly no one else in the family likes them. 🙁 Now, if it were only pears, or peaches, or apples… 🙂 I hope you have good growth from your onion sets – I like to grow both sets and starts each year, as I like the differences in each (read: if I can’t get one to grow that year, then the other type may, lol!). Thanks for sharing with us!
