As I finish up knitting projects, I always set aside my scrap yarn for the birds. As we are in spring and the birds are perusing our bird houses the scrap yarn, draped over the hedges as below, provides them with some nesting materials in various colors in cottons and wools.
It’s fun to head out with Tomato and talk to her about how a bird’s house is different from our house and why they are building nests. It is also a great opportunity to talk about different colors, which is one of her current favorite things to point out, and textures (soft vs. scratchy mainly). We have yet to see the birds take a piece when we are watching, but they do disappear. Hopefully, our waste can become their gain. I may be buying a suet cage this spring and following Susie, from Fiber Farm’s lead, and creating this.
So, maybe we will have a better chance of viewing them as they use the materials. For the fellow knitters out there, what do you do with your scrap yarn?

What a neat idea – my daughter would love to leave yarn out for the birds.
Stopping by from the That Friday Blog Hop – glad I found your site!
