Gardening Checklist

by Becky Elmuccio on March 28, 2012

As I was thinking of how to figure out how to write down what I need to get done in the garden and write a blog post today, among other things that need to get sorted through, I was feeling stressed. Then, I suddenly remembered that I write a gardening blog and thought, “Hey! I can kill two birds with one stone!” Suffice to say, I’ve had a lot on my mind this week. It’s funny how the simplest answers are oftentimes right in front of your nose.

So, what do I need to do to get the garden prepped? Here’s the list:

1. Finish raking under the hedges and the stray leaves by our bird feeding tree. Put them out for vegetative waste pick up and put some in the composter.

2. Spray vinegar on the remaining weeds in the front walk. I’ll put a post up about how this goes later. It’s a new weed removal method for me.
3. Weed through the blackberry patch, which may need to move when we put a fence in this spring.
4. Bury some of the blackberries’ long canes to start some new bushes.

5. Weed through the raised beds and fill in with new dirt and compost.
6. Look through seed catalogs and order the seeds that I need. Yup, little behind on that one.

7. Spray down the boards from the potato bins and find a new spot for the potato bins in order to use new soil.
8. Do the soil sample for Rutgers Cooperative Extension and send it off to be tested for lead. This comes with the territory of having an old house.
9. Plan what flowers to put in along the garage in lieu of veggies since that soil will probably be unable to be used. I’d like to figure out how to time the blooms so that I have new blooms throughout the spring and summer and figure out how to stagger heights.
10. Preview and decide which iPhone garden apps I’d like to utilize.

11. Weed and put gravel down along one side of the garage.
12. Put stakes and chicken wire around 3 beds.
13. Put chicken wire around one blueberry plant.
14. Read, read and read some more about each variety of plants we have, especially the herbs, to see how I can be the most successful at doing this in an organic way.
15. Get composter up and running.

I think that’s it for now, although I am sure more will pop into my head. So, what is on your gardening to do list?
